Joint Replacement Center

A Message from Yaser Metwally, M.D., Medical Director

Great quality of life means different things to different people. For many, it means spending time playing with your children or grandchildren. Or it can mean spending time outdoors enjoying a round of golf, a bicycle ride or just a nice walk. We are blessed to live in an area that offers so many amazing opportunities to enjoy an active lifestyle.

However you define a great quality of life, chances are that being able to walk and move without pain is an important part of it. And, as we age, being able to do the things we love to do without pain often becomes more and more challenging.

Arthritis effects about 40 millions Americans, or one in eight. In Oregon, an estimated 36 percent of all adults are being impacted by the pain of arthritis, according to a new study by the Oregon Arthritis Coalition. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, but what they all have in common is that they all negatively impact people's quality of life.

As an orthopedic surgeon, I've seen the ways in which arthritis attacks joints and robs people of mobility and independence. I've spent my adult life learning how to better combat the effects of arthritis and help people revitalize their quality of life.

That's why I'm pleased to announce the opening of the Rogue Valley Joint Replacement Center. Total joint replacement--surgically implanting a prosthetic joint in place of an arthritic one--is one of the most effective ways to reduce pain and restore mobility for arthritis sufferers.

Along with the other orthopedic surgeons at Southern Oregon Orthopedics, I've worked closely with the RVMC staff to develop a joint replacement program that will shorten hospital stays and improve the quality of orthopedic care. Bringing together our combined expertise, we have created a program that is unparalleled in our region.

From extensive pre-surgery education to a comprehensive continuum of care following surgery, the program is designed to ensure that patients have the information, care and support they need every step of the way.

Together, the physicians of SOOI and the staff of RVMC are working to restore the quality of life for the people of southern Oregon and northern California, one joint at a time.

Program Overview
For many people, the pain of arthritis and the loss of joint mobility are viewed as an inevitable part of aging. An estimated 40 million Americans suffer from one of the more than 100 types of arthritis and many of them remain unaware of treatments that can ease their pain and restore their quality of life.

Aching joints don't have to be rite of passage. There are a number of ways to reduce pain and restore mobility for people suffering from arthritis. Maintaining a healthy weight and staying active are two of the most effective. Often, the damage arthritis has done to the joint is best addressed by total joint replacement-the implanting of a synthetic joint in place of a painfully arthritic one.

Joint replacement can greatly restore mobility and reduce pain. RVMC and Southern Oregon Orthopedics have come together to develop the Rogue Valley Joint Replacement Center, an advanced program to improve the quality of life for arthritis suffers, one joint at a time.

The Joint Replacement Center offers a comprehensive approach that is designed to provide patients with the education and support they need both before and after surgery.

Through the Rogue Valley Joint Replacement Center, many patients are able to have their surgery and return home to begin their recovery that same week. Prior to the program, patients would typically be hospitalized for five to six days, rather than three or four.

The program features extensive pre-surgery education to help patients prepare for surgery and have a better idea of what to expect in their recovery. Patients recover in a dedicated unit at RVMC and the specialized physicians at SOOI have worked closely with the nursing staff to develop a program that is focused on providing patients with the smoothest surgery and recovery possible.

If arthritis pain is having an impact on your quality of life, discuss treatment options, including joint replacement with your physician or contact Southern Oregon Orthopedics at 1-800-866-9887.
